Mord & Mairi's Wedding Contract

Mord Hrutsson known as the Green
wishing to marry Mairi,
pays mundr for this marriage
to Duchess Rowan and to
Mistress Thora, Wool-Woman:

A poem in anglo-saxon,
a stead with buildings and fields,
a booth at Thing Assembly,
two chairs of wood that fold up
painted with their coats of arms,
eight milk cows, two roosters,
one he-, five she-goats, a pig,
12 chickens, a horse and cart,
her weight in amber, a slave,
two silver pins, 6 pendants,
a favor made by his hand,
a new gorget, a dagger
with a sheath, and vanbraces,
a needle case and silver
chain to hang it from her brooch,
a loom, a diptych dolphined,
2 casks of ale, silver cup,
not to yell too loud at her,
cloth for Duchess and her kin,
cloth for Thora's clan also,
5 gold needles for stitch work,
allow Mairi's directions
once per year to be all wrong,
no tickling, but to her
the right to rapid stroke
seductively, at her whim.

Sir Mord promises also,
to dance with her when she asks,
to bathe himself once per week,
not to wear his shoes in bed,
let her eat her anchovies,
not to make the chili hot,
defend her honor when she
is not defending herself,
three yards silk annually,
or five yards of wool bought cheap,
or four yards of linen, fine,
along with ten yards of trim,
carry her favor except
when bathing or she says no,
to put on tights once per year
with clothing that she picks out.

This mundr shall now become
the property of Mairi
and shall revert to her kin
in case of death or divorce.

Her bench-gift shall be brooches.

For each child born to them,
a naming gift, for a girl:
a milk calf, 5 yards of silk,
leather or bone weaving cards,
a pair of viking brooches.
A naming gift, for a boy:
a bull calf, 5 yards of silk,
a silver Thor's hammer,
a sword. To teach them his skills,
or find others to teach them,
fighting, sailing, leather-work,
wood-working, law and commerce.
To Mairi, for each child born,
amber, the weight of the child.
Each child born to them truly,
Shall be called legitimate,
Mundr having been paid out
to the one they call "mother."

The family of Mairi,
in agreement with Sir Mord,
will provide heimanfylgja
in the amount following:
five knorr (that's a viking ship),
Diablo's weight in silver,
amber, a medieval bag,
an arm ring for his right arm,
viking leather shoes that fit,
to let him dance with others
with Mairi's knowledge and say,
a new cloak pin, and three spears,
with sheaths to fit on these spears,
he'll wear another's favor
if Mairi says that he can,
at least three tunics per year,
or two tunics and some pants,
of wool, or linen or silk,
with embroidery or beads,
a new fighting tunic or
new fighting pants, as needed,
a battle axe, a shield boss,
a strap for his drinking horn,
a sea chest carved with his rune,
lots of beer, ale preferably,
single malt scotch and some soap,
the occasional meat meal,
not to serve asparagus,
Lima beans or brussel sprouts,
to always have plenty of
ice cream, juice and broccoli,
to make sure he eats his fruit,
a favor for battle dress,
an anglo-saxon harp, and
mead in suitable bottles.

Mairi promises also
to make clothes for his bond-men,
not to cut her hair unknown,
to sing him and his children
to sleep with sweet lullabies,
to teach his children her skills:
to sew, embroider, weave, cook,
play the harp, sing, read and write.
A new dancing polar bear,
a bull, to teach him to weave,
to warn him of PMS,
to bear him strong healthy kids,
as best as she is able,
to represent his household
with honor and dignity.

This heimanfygja remains
the property of Mairi
and shall revert to her kin
in case of death or divorce.

This contract, having been read
at the Assembly, and signed
by all those in attendance,
shall be lawful and binding
upon these two good gentles.
